Glossary and Acronyms
Bottle Sumo (Robofest)
Another category of Robofest. Not offered as an official competition at Acadia University, but typically offered as a workshop in the spring.
EV3
LEGO robot kit discontinued in 2020. Functions similarly to SPIKE Prime and is programmable with EV3 Classroom software.
FIRST LEGO League Challenge (FLL / FLL Challenge)
- FIRST is the organization that creates yearly robot challenges. It stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
- FIRST LEGO League is a division of competition created by FIRST.
- Challenge refers to the specific branch of FLL that is hosted by Acadia as Program Delivery Partners.
- Please note that FLL Discover and FLL Explore are not currently offered at Acadia Robotics.
Game (Robofest)
Robofest offers several challenges, or “categories.” The category offered at the Acadia Championship is called Game, available in both Junior and Senior divisions.
JSOCS
Acadia University's Jodrey School of Computer Science (JSOCS) houses Acadia Robotics, providing in-kind support for the program's events and day-to-day operations.
LEGO Robotics
Refers to robot kits and software developed by LEGO Education, such as SPIKE Prime, EV3, and NXT models. LEGO Robotics are used in both of our competitions, FIRST LEGO League Challenge and Robofest.
Pit
Each competing team is allotted one or two tables that they can use as their home base during the competition. Separate practice tables will be available for practicing the robot game in both competitions.
Pit Number
Corresponding to their Pit’s location, each team will receive a number that will be used throughout the event by volunteers for quick identification. The Pit Number is exclusively used during the Acadia RPC and is not the same as the team's official ID assigned by FIRST or Robofest.
RPC
Robot Programming Competitions (RPC) refers to the two championship competitions offered at Acadia University each winter. Both competitions occur over the same weekend, with FLL Challenge taking place on Saturday and Robofest on Sunday. While participants are welcome to compete in, volunteer at, or attend both competitions, they are distinct events.
Robofest
An organization based out of Lawrence Technological University that creates annual robot challenges. Acadia is the official Robofest Game site host for the Maritimes and currently hosts the only in-person Game competition in Canada.
SPIKE Prime
The newest LEGO Education robot platform. It is programmable using the accompanying software, the SPIKE Prime App.
STEM / STEAM
STEM includes the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEAM includes these fields plus Arts.
UTF
Unknown Tasks and Factors (UTF) are revealed to Robofest Game teams on competition day. UTFs include new challenge-specific details that teams must incorporate during their final 30-minute work period. UTFs are provided in a sealed envelope containing one page, typically including a diagram, and are available in both English and French.
